From Heart to Head: Promoting Dementia Prevention, Empathy and Awareness

FAQs

What is the biggest dementia myth?

Myth: People living with dementia cannot live quality lives.

Dementia does not define a person. Through modern medications, hopeful new research, compassionate communities, and diverse clinical studies, people with dementia can have and deserve fulfilling lives.

But isn’t dementia an older adult disease? Why should I care now?

In today’s society, we are so focused on the present, but I invite you to look to the future. Developing healthy living skills now will improve your life in the long run. Improved cardiovascular health decreases the risk of all kinds of diseases and provides better quality and quantity of life.

Also, dementia does not only impact older adults. 300,000 Americans younger than 65 years old have dementia.

What increases my risk for dementia?

Science tells us that poor cardiovascular health is linked to increased dementia risk later in life. You can reduce your dementia risk by: quitting smoking, wearing a helmet to prevent brain injury, exercising, having a healthy diet, pursuing formal education, challenging your mind, getting enough sleep, treating your mental health, socially engaging, and managing cardiovascular diseases like diabetes.

Is it too late for me to change my lifestyle?

No! It’s never too late to be healthy and reduce your risk for dementia. I recommend starting small to prevent burnout. Find out more tips and tricks on how to begin your healthy living journey on the From Heart to Head Take Action Page.

Wait, is dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease different?

They are! Dementia is an umbrella term for many different types of brain diseases. Alzheimer’s Disease is a form of dementia. Making up 60% of dementia cases, Alzheimer’s Disease often leads to memory loss and eventual loss of function. Dementia is a progressive disease and is individual to the person. Some other forms of dementia are Cardiovascular Dementia, Lewy-Body Dementia, and Frontotemporal Dementia.
